Knowledge of Earth's location in the universe has been shaped by 400 years of telescopic observations, and has expanded radically in the last century. Less than two metres tall and only lasting about 70 years — can we matter in a universe that is so big and so old, so dark and so cold? Friday Afternoon in the Universe is an album released by experimental jazz fusion trio Medeski Martin & Wood. From its expansion and acceleration to dark matter and energy, the universe continues to surprise astronomers. For thousands of years, astronomers wrestled with basic questions about the size and age of the universe. This gigantic explosion of pure energy started approximately 13.4 billion years ago. Hubble's successor is poised to peer into the origins of our universe. The ultimate fate of the universe is a topic in physical cosmology. The rest is a mysterious substance known only as dark matter. For some time, given the disposition of matter, I refuse to believe in a single big bang that started the universe. In this talk, I would like to speculate a little, on the development of life in the universe, and in particular, the development of intelligent life. Now scientists think that even this extravagant census of the universe might be as out-of-date as the five-planet cosmos that Galileo inherited from the ancients. We only know about a small fraction of the matter in the Universe.
